Health, Fitness & Family Culture

Do you actively promote health and fitness in your family culture? Is it just a normal way of life for your family?

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines culture as ‘the beliefs, customs, art etcetera of a particular society, group, place or time.’ It further defines customs as ‘an action or way of behaving that is usual and traditional among the people in a particular group.’

Four signs that your family has a strong culture in health and fitness include:

1. You celebrate participation and achievement in sports, fitness and physical activity. Your family members know that when they have a go, you will have their back and be positive and supportive. They know that you will notice their efforts and they feel great about sharing their pursuits with you.

2. You find ways to be active together. Your family will all engage in throwing the frisbee at the beach, creating games at the family functions and taking a walk or bike ride together. You might even have a home gym or do some fitness classes together.

3. You talk about health and fitness at home. Your family members understand the basics and importance of nutrition, strength and conditioning and daily physical exercise. You help to teach each other what you are learning, and how you are applying that to your life.

4. The cupboards and fridge have mostly healthy foods which are easy to access. Making healthy choices from the key macronutrients in carbohydrates, lean protein, healthy fats and zero-sugar drinks during the day just feels normal to everyone.
